On Wednesday, February 5th, we invite you to join us for the opening of Freedom is a Landscape by Şadan Ekdemir, featuring an Artist Talk at the Nordic Black Theatre.
Photography has been my passion for many years, taking me through diverse genres, like music photography, portraits, events, and my personal favourite, landscapes. Landscapes are like scenes without a main character in it, without a story attached to it. They stand apart, scenes without main characters, free from imposed narratives. Just colors and objects of the beautiful nature that is surrounding us. It’s spontaneous, almost without a thought. I intend to capture whatever happens in that very moment.
Looking at landscapes reminds me of inner freedom. Freedom from thought, from the busy mind that is very keen on telling stories and adding mental constructs. Instead, just looking at it to witness the earth being earth, nature being nature, love being love, can make us realise that nature is looking back at us. Freedom is a landscape on which we live our shared being. It’s not a distant place or a dream. Freedom is the moment when I become aware of the present moment, and look inside. It is the realisation of true love, which is inside everything we see.
In this selection of pictures, you’ll find momentary glimpses from the surroundings of the Scandinavian landscapes and cities, including Norway, Iceland and Faroe Islands. Each picture is an invitation to pause, take a breath, and feel the shared space we all live in.
Şadan Ekdemir, born in 1985, in Sinop, Turkey. He started to work with photography when he moved to Norway in 2012, by taking concert pictures at a student culture center Folken in Stavanger. After moving to Oslo, he started to explore other fields of photography, such as pictures of landscapes and animals, along with pictures that create an emotion in the viewer. He also works as a consultant in the IT business, working mainly with frontend developer and UX in his developer career.
